Leymus cinereus (Great Basin Wildrye) is a very tall growing, native, cool season grass. It blooms in late spring with long spikes of tan flowers held straight-up over stunning blue foliage. Late spring blooms are a valuable attribute, as most other large native grasses are warm season growers that flower much later in the summer and fall. The tan-and-blue grass is a perfect addition to sophisticated grass plantings, and an excellent companion for later blooming perennials.
Description
60-72ā tall x 18-24ā wide. Leymus cinereus (Great Basin Wildrye) is a fabulous native grass grown for its large size, attractive tall flower spikes and eye-catching blue foliage. Native to the Great Basin area, centered in Utah and Nevada, this little-known beauty deserves much wider use. A cool season grower, its blue leaves sprout up early in the spring and blooms starting in late spring. High Country Garden plants are grown from select plants chosen for their extra blue leaves and sturdy upright growth habit. Plant it alongside or behind native shrubs like Fernbush (or Desert Sweet, Chamaebatiaria), and perennials like tall Penstemon and ‘Coronation Gold’ Yarrow.
