Sempervivum hybrid ‘Chick Charms® Appletini™’ (Hens and Chicks) is an award-winning form with rosettes of pointed, bright green leaves dipped in dark chocolately-brown. The striking rosettes are cold hardy, easy-to-grow, and eye-catching. Evergreen and hardy from zones 3 to 8, Appletini™ will tolerate drought and cold temperatures. Cute but tough, it is ideal for a low-maintenance container, rock garden, path edge, or rock wall. The low-growing form makes a good groundcover, too. This collectable succulent will produce many ‘chicks’ for spreading or sharing.
Description
Sempervivum hybrid ‘Chick Charms® Appletini™’ (Hens and Chicks) are easy to grow, requiring simply sandy to average soil with good drainage. The Royal Horticultural Society awarded Appletini™ Hens and Chicks with its prestigious Award of Garden Merit. The larger 4-inch rosette (hen) is accompanied by smaller rosettes (chicks). Once the hen bloom with a lovely pink flower in summer, it will die, but the chicks will grow to quickly take her place, and the cycle begins anew. Native to central and southern Europe and the Mediterranean islands, they are traditionally grown on the roofs of houses with virtually no soil or care. Plant them in average to low fertility soil with good drainage in a full sun or morning sun/afternoon shade location. They grow most in spring and summer, spreading as they grow, so give them space when planting. Pair with other Sempervivum to create a mosaic effect. Deer and rabbits avoid these plants.
The Chick Charms® series are exquisite Sempervivum cultivars selected for their colors and vigor.
